Houston Cougars men’s basketball has long had success on the court, but their Phi Slama Jama teams from 1982-84 flew as high as NASA rockets. Head coach Guy Lewis encouraged a high-flying style uncharacteristic of “traditional” teams, such as John Wooden’s UCLA teams that dominated the decade prior; Lewis’ players watched the ABA and slam-dunking stars like Julius Erving, and modeled their play accordingly.
