The legend goes that in 1953, the University of Tennessee Pep Club sought a live coonhound mascot, clarifying that, “This can’t be an ordinary hound. He must be a ‘Houn’ Dog’ in the best sense of the word.” Blue Smokey was chosen, and UT struck gold with one of the best live mascots in college sports.
