UGA “The Tree That Owns Itself” Vintage Heavyweight Tee
If you know, you know… and if you are one specific tree in Athens, you also know your property rights. As the story goes, Col. William H. Jackson deeded an oak tree and the eight-foot area surrounding it to itself, based on, as he put it, “the great love [he bears] this tree and the great desire [he has] for its protection for all time.” While no one’s sure if he was allowed to do that, many have ensured its care and protection; when the original white oak fell in 1942, the Junior Ladies Garden Club of Athens worked swiftly to gather its acorns to sprout the tree that stands to this day.
